Look at maintaing your violin as if you were looking at maintaining a friendship. You can do more than necessary, you can do what is necessary, and you can do less than neccessary.
Let's start with doing less than necessary: You don't visit your friend regularly (you don't practice the violin often), you don't ever check out what your friend might need (you don't wipe the rosin off the strings, you don't wipe the rosin from under the strings, you don't do any of the other recommended things (see below).
Do what is necessary
Practise regularly - te violin will b ever so graeful when you caress her strings
Wipe the rosin off the strings and under the strings after you finished practising.
Keep the violin in a room temperature that you'd feel comfortable in - not too hot! So don't leave it in the parked car when the weather is warm, and don't carry it in the boot unless the boot is airconditioned as well.
Every few months: Check if the bridge is still straight
