Consider 3 main factors when deciding on a violin:
1. How confident are you that the musician will enjoy the instrument for a long time?
2. How soon will the musician grow out the current violin size?
3. How much am I willing/able to spend on a violin outfit?
Most parents buy an inexpensive instrument until the musician grows into a full size violin. Some parents are willing to increase the quality with every step towards a full size violin.
The idea is to obtain the best possible sound in whatever price category you have decided to assist your young musician.
If the purchase is for a mature aged musician, then I suggest to invest as much as possible, no matter if you are a beginner or if you are advanced. Make it as nice as possible for yourself. The reason behind this is that you have probably considered this step for quite some time. The intent is relatively strong, and you need a full size violin anyway - the last size you will ever need.
In terms of sound most musicians look for a rich, warm, singing, outgoing, noble, clear sound.
