The easiest way to tune a double bass

Tuning a double bass can seem like a very daunting task but in fact it is very simple. It is much easier than most people are lead to believe and anyone can do it. With the right tools and equipment we'll have you tuning in no time!

Firstly insure the strings of the bass are in good condition and are not freying, unwinding or discoloured. Bass strings last quite a long time so ask someone how old the strings are, they may need to be changed even if they are not broken. When tuning a double bass most people would need an electronic tuner to assist with the process. We reccomend the use of a KORG Solo Tuner. This is the only available product that reads the lower frequencies of the bass, especially the lower strings. A regular tuner will be of little use. The KORG tuner can be purchased from our online store.

Unlike other string instruments the bass does not have fine tuners. This requires you to use the silver pegs located at the top of the bass. Position yourself in front of the bass with the strings facing you. To sharpen the note (raise the pitch) turn the peg to the right. To flatten the note (lower the pitch) turn the peg to the left. If you pluck the string as you go you will hear the note getting higher or lower and be able to hear if you're turning the peg in the right direction.

The strings on a bass from left to right are E A D G. Your KORG electronic tuner will display the note being played and if that note is flat, sharp or in tune. Watch the needle displayed on the screen. It will move either left or right depending on the pitch. Turn the pegs until the display needle is in the centre of the screen. Complete this process until all strings have been tuned.

You have now successfully tuned your double bass!
