Tightening a bow is a very simple task that can be done in seconds. The same process is used to tighten a violin, viola, cello and bass bow.
Hold the heel of the bow firmly in your left hand with the tip (pointed end) facing towards the left. Using your thumb and pointer finger of your right hand turn the screw away from your body. You will notice the hair gradually becoming tighter. If you find it difficult to turn the screw it may need some lubrication.
Do not tighten the bow too much or you could snap the stick. The bow should still have its natural curve (concave, not convex).
How much do I tighten my bow?
(All measurements are taken from the middle of the bow)
Violin Bow - Just under 1cm
Viola Bow - Just under 1 cm
Cello Bow - Just over 1 cm
Bass (French Bow) - Just over 1 1/2 cm
Bass (German Bow) - Just over 2 1/2cm
Make sure when you have finished playing your instrument that you remember to unwind your bow. Only unwind your bow to the point where the hair still holds its shape. It should not be floppy or separating. If you remember to do this it will make your bow and the hair last much longer!
