How to choose your first viola

Consider 3 main factors when deciding on a viola:

1. How confident are you that the musician will enjoy the instrument for a long time?
2. How soon will the musician grow out the current viola size?
3. How much am I willing/able to spend on a viola outfit?

Most parents buy an inexpensive, small violin, strung as a viola, until the musician grows into a full size viola. Full size violas start at 15" main body length. Teens from the age of 13 are often ready for a 'real' viola. Some parents are willing to increase the quality with every step towards a full size viola. The idea is to obtain the best possible sound in whatever price category you have decided to assist your young musician.

If the purchase is for a mature aged musician, then I suggest to invest as much as possible, no matter if you are a beginner or if you are advanced. Make it as nice as possible for yourself. The reason behind this is that you have probably considered this step for quite some time. The intent is relatively strong, and you need a full size viola anyway - the last size you will ever need. In terms of sound most musicians look for a rich, deep and outgoing viola sound.
