Applying rosin to a bow is a quick and simple task. Firstly make sure your bow is tightened before you apply the rosin. Hold your rosin firmly in one hand and your bow in the other. Place the hair of the bow onto the surface of the rosin and pull the bow backwards and forwards applying a small amount of pressure.
If you have a new bow that has never been rosined you will need to apply a considerable amount for the bow to grip the strings. Test the bow along the way by playing the instrument, if the sound comes out with ease then your bow is ready, if the sound is uneven and requires you to push quite hard to make a sound then keep applying rosin.
If you have been playing with a rosined bow you need only apply rosin once or twice a week, not every time you play. Your bow retains some rosin after you play and if it is continually rosined it will build up on the hair and the strings. You must always clean the rosin off the inside of your bow and the belly of the instrument, do this with a speciality cleaning cloth or a normal kitchen cloth. The cloth should be dry, not damp.
