How to use a humidifier

Humidifiers are a wonderful invention that all string players must know about. Often referred to as a worm the humidifier is a rubbery tube that has an absorbent sponge inside. You submerge the tube into water and squeeze out the excess water through several little holes along the casing. The tube is then put inside the instrument through the 'f' holes and is held in place by a black rubber stopper. The water inside the sponge creates moisture that is slowly released through the wood and throughout the case.

In this hot weather it can get terribly humid and very dry. It is extremely important that we use a humidifier in these conditions as it keeps the wood happy. The wood can separate and form open seams which will lead to expensive repairs later on. If you are hot then your instrument probably is too!
