When choosing your case keep the following things in mind:
- Does the case function properly: Check the case thoroughly to see if the zips, clips, buttons, handles, straps and pockets are all in working order. Make sure your instrument and bow fits into the case making sure your violin isn't too tight or loose. Is there a place for the shoulder rest to go? Often cases don't have a compartment for the shoulder rest which can sometimes be very annoying. It can always fit into the case somehow but it's nice to have it secure and away from the violin.
- Check that the weight of the case is not too heavy and think about how much you will carrying your instrument. Do you need to walk home from school? Walk across the city to perform in a concert? You don't want a sore back when you have practice to do!
- Another thing to think about is how protective the case is. Most student level cases are quite sturdy but are easily broken if treated badly. Think about the conditions the case will be under and consider upgrading to a better case. An example of this is a child taking a violin on a bus. The instrument could be dropped, hit on a chair, or sat on even.
