Entry level cellos are about 3 times more expensive than entry level violins. It just takes more time and timber to produce a cello. However, the upside of this equasion is that a basic cello (as a rule) has a sound that is less likely to sound like an 'entry level sound.' It is likely to sound better! It seems to be, so to speak, less of an issue for the makers to produce reasonable sounding cellos whereas it is more of a challange for the makers to produce nice sounding violins.
The conclusion is that is it perfectly ok to play on an entry level cello without feeling discouraged by a not-so-nice sound. Another issue is 'strings.' Cello strings are also a lot more expensive than violin or viola strings. It is recommended to upgrade at least the top string - the A string - as it often sounds a little tinny otherwise.
