It is common practice to transform violins into violas as long as the student has not gained enough in body height and arm length to cope with a 'real' viola size. Just to remind us about the violin sizes:

14" = 4/4 violin (14" is the length of the main body)

13" = 3/4 violn

12" = 1/2 violin

11" = 1/4 violin

When transformed into a viola, the lower three strings on the violin will shift, the top string is removed, and a lower string (the C string) is added. As the C string is significantly thicker than the other strngs, it is also the most expensive string. Therefore, violins, transformed into violas, cost a little more than the original violin.  The normal price of a Arco Violin is $277 (30% Discount available here) the price of the C String is $20 (No discount available)
